Aseptic handling in the lab

Sterility is the difference between a research-grade solution and a contaminated one. None of this is difficult; all of it is habit.

Before you start

  • Clear and wipe the bench.
  • Wash your hands. Gloves are optional; clean hands are not.
  • Let cold vials warm for ten minutes. Drawing from a cold vial pulls condensation inside.

Every time you draw

  1. 01
Swab the stopperA new wipe each time. Wipe once, in one direction, and let it dry.
  2. 02
Fresh needleA needle that has touched anything else has touched the whole vial.
  3. 03
Equalise the pressureDraw air equal to the volume you want, inject it into the vial, then draw the liquid. The stopper lasts longer and nothing sprays.
  4. 04
InspectHold the syringe to the light. Cloudiness or particles means stop.

Sharps and disposal

Needles go straight into a sharps bin, never re-capped and never in general waste. Empty vials are glass recycling once the stopper is removed. Solutions past their date are diluted and disposed of as chemical waste under your institution’s rules.
